T: Good morning, students. I'm so glad to see you. Hope you are well. As I can see all are present. It's really great. I think it's possible to start our work. The subject of our today's lesson is very exciting. We are going to speak about famous British writers and poets. So let's start our lesson with learning the poem "Six Serving Men" by Rudyard Kipling. You can find this poem in your books on page 43. I can see you have found the poem. On the next page there is its translation into
Ukrainian by L.Solonko. We'll read this translation now. Will you start reading, Andrew?

T: Before reading this poem in English, we'll read some words, which I think are new for you. You can see these words and their meanings on page 44. So listen and repeat after me in chorus.

T: serving men

Pls: serving men

T: honest

Pls: honest Etc.

For I am busy then, hungry, views, own affairs.)

T: Now listen to the tapescript of the poem "Six Serving Men" and follow the printed text of it in your books on page 43.

"Six Serving Men"

I have six honest serving men -

They taught me ali I knew.

Their names are What and Why and When,

And How and Where and Who.

I send them over land and sea,

I send them East and West;

But after they have worked for me,

I give them all a rest.

I let them rest from nine till five,

For I am busy then,

As well as breakfast, lunch and tea,

For they are hungry men.

But different folk have different views

I know a person small,

She keeps ten million serving men,

Who get no rest at all!

She sends them her own affairs,

From the second she opens her eyes –

One million Hows, two million Wheres,

And seven million Whys!

T: Now we'll try to read the poem. So read each two lines after me in chorus. Let's start.

T: I have six honest serving men –

They taught me all I knew.

Pls: I have six honest serving men –

They taught me all I knew.

T: Their names are What and Why and When,

And How and Where and Who.

Pls: Their names are What and Why and When,

And How and Where and Who. Etc.

T: Now I'll start a line and you should complete it.

I have six ...

P1: ... honest serving men -

T: They taught me …

P2: ...all I knew.

T: Their names are ....

P3: ...What and Why and When,

T: And ...

P4: How and Where and Who.

T: Who can recite the first verse? Valery, will you try?

T: You made a very good job of that! Next time we'll have a competition for the best reciting of the poem. I want you all to participate in reciting the poem by heart.
T: I am sure that each of you likes reading. So reading is your favourite pastime, isn't it? No doubt, you know many names of famous British writers and poets. Today we are going to have the panel discussion (Panel discussion is like a relay race in which each teammate is an individual performer. Each of some speakers gives a carefully organized talk on a different phase of the subject. And he gives his talk from beginning to end without any interruption by the audience. The audience have an opportunity to ask questions and make comments after the talk.) the subject of which is "The Famous English Writers and Poets". T: My dear friends, your time is running out, so I think we'll start our discussion. Who will be the first to speak? All right, Katerina, you are welcome.

Katerina: I'm going to speak about William Shakespeare. Though he lived many years ago his plays and sonnets are popular nowadays. I like Shakespeare's plays too, especially "Romeo and Juliet".William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, a small English town. He spent his childhood in his native town. William studied at a grammar school. He was fond of English folk-songs and ballads. When William's father became poor he had to go to London and begin to work. His first job was to look after horses. The best and the most popular Shakespeare's works are "King Lear", "Romeo and Juliet", "Twelfth Night", "Hamlet", "Othello". In his works he describes relations between people, their love, sorrows and joys. I've read "Romeo and Juliet" and "Twelfth Night" not in the original but in Russian translation. Unfortunately I haven't found any translation in Ukrainian.

T: Thanks, Katerina. Have you got any questions to Katerina?

P1: Will you say a few words about Shakespeare's theatre?

Katerina: Oh, surely. Shakespeare founded the theatre which name was "The Globe". He wrote the plays for the theatre and played the main parts in them.

T: Would you like to add anything?

P2: I'd like to add that when William was a boy his father was a rich man and he gave his son a good education. William knew Latin well and could read and translate Latin books.

T: Thank you. Any other comments? No. So let's switch over to another report. I think Oleg will present it.

Oleg: I'd like to speak about George Gordon Byron. Many people think that Byron's lyrics is difficult to understand. But when we began learning facts from Byron's life and his literary and social activity I took from the library Byron's poems in Russian, unfortunately they didn't have them in Ukrainian. Of course it was difficult at first to understand but then I realized that this poet is an example of courage and heroism. Byron was born in London, on the twenty-second of January in 1788. He spent his early years in the small town of Aberdeen. He was ten when he inherited the title of Lord Byron. Byron's first poetical efforts were made before he was thirteen. In 1812 he published his Child Harold's Pilgrimage which brought him fame and universal acclaim. Byron wrote many poems, one of which was devoted to Ukrainian hetman Mazepa. His last novel was "Don Juan". In 1816 he left England to fight for the liberation of Italy and Greece. He died in 1824 at the age of 36.

T: I'm very grateful to you, Oleg. Do you wish to say anything else?

P2: I would like to add that Byron visited not only Greece and Italy, he also travelled in Portugal, Spain, Turkey and other countries.

T: You are right. Thank you. Who is the next to speak? Victoria, I think, is eager to speak. You are welcome.

Victoria: The subject of my report is Kipling's life and his literary activity. Last year I read Kipling's book about Mowgli [maugli], a little Indian boy who lived in the jungle with the wolves. It impressed me greatly and I got interested in Kipling's life. I know that Kipling was born in India in 1865. His father worked there at that time. He was a famous painter. When Rudyard was six his parents sent him to England where he went to school. At twenty-one Kipling published his first book of poems. Between 1887 and 1899 Kipling travelled to many countries. During that time he wrote some of his best stones about animals and some books on history. In 1907 Kipling was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. His last book he wrote in 1926 in which he showed how he hated wars. When he died in 1936 he was buried in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey in London.

T: Would you ask Victoria any questions?

P3: Did Kipling have children?

Victoria: Yes, he did. Kipling had two children - a boy and a girl. He lost his son in the World War I, and his daughter died in America.

P4: How did Kipling study at school?

Victoria: At school he didn't like mathematics, but he was good at history. He even received a gold medal for his work in history.

T: In summary I would like to thank all for your participation in the panel discussion, for your knowledge and thoughts about famous English writers. What you have told was perfectly all right.

T: Let's move on to something different. For the next lesson you are to write a composition about your favourite writer. Now let's have a look at exercise 71 on page 45 in your books. There is a scheme there. Use it to write your own stones.

  1. My favourite writer is ...

  2. He/she was born ...

  3. He/she began his/her literary activity ...

  4. He/she wrote such works as ...

  5. One of his/her best works is ...

  6. It is about ...

  7. The main character of this work is ...

  8. I like this author because ...

T: So your homework for the next lesson is:

  1. to write a short composition about your favourite writer;

  2. to read the story about Charlotte Bronte on page 101 and to answer the questions after the story.

T: I should express my satisfaction at the work of your group, the excellent results achieved, the atmosphere of cordiality and mutual understanding. All those who took part in the discussion get 12 points. See you again on Tuesday. Don't forget about your homework. Bye-bye, boys and girls.
